Tin Can Bay

Tin Can Bay storage follows the boats

The town sits on the inlet at the south end of the Great Sandy Strait. Work and weekends run around the harbour, the fishing, and the foreshore. A container here usually holds that gear, or the overflow when a holiday house fills up.

Gear

Outboards, pots, and the spare room

The usual load is boating kit: outboards, nets, crab pots, rods and spare parts, plus whatever will not fit in the house when family comes up. A trailer boat goes inside only if you measure the hull, the trailer and the motor against the door, not against the outside length of the box. A 20ft with shelves takes the pots and the spare motor for plenty of houses that never needed the boat indoors.

Longer rigs need a 40ft, and that only works if the block has room for the truck that places it. Check the opening on the 40ft page before you assume.

Salt and sand

Paint, the roof, and a firm pad

Salt air marks bare steel faster than it does inland. Keep the paint whole, treat chips early, and sweep sand and leaves off the roof so they are not sitting wet. Door hinges cop blown grit. A look a few times a year is ordinary coastal ownership, not a special coating.

Harbour streets are narrow and a lot of lots are sand. A tilt-tray can dig in as it tips on a loose pad. A compacted patch, or solid supports ready for the corners, keeps the truck honest and the doors square afterwards. Measure a side setback before you fall for a length that will not fit.

The road in

Filled in Gympie, then Tin Can Bay Road

Harbour orders are filled in Gympie and then follow Tin Can Bay Road. The whole trip is in the quoted figure. Marine trades near the water use that same run when they need a dry room for nets and parts that cannot sit on an open rack.

Linen and electronics want a grade sold to stay weather-tight. Crab pots and rough gear can live in a cheaper as-seen unit, which is not sold that way. Hire suits a tidy-up between seasons. Buying suits kit that lives here all year.

Nearby

4580 at the inlet, 4581 if you keep going

Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Cove are both 4580, and they are not the same drop. Cove streets are wider and flatter. Rainbow Beach and Inskip are 4581, at the end of the sealed coast road. Goomboorian, Wolvi and Toolara Forest are 4570, back toward the highway.

Gympie Regional Council covers the Bay. A plain store and a fit-out are different questions for their planners.

Questions from the Bay

Can I put the tinny in it?

Often, once the hull, trailer and motor have been checked against the door and the internal length. A long rig needs a 40ft and room for the truck that places it.

How hard is the salt on the steel?

Harder than inland, on any bare metal. Keep paint intact, clear the roof, and sit the floor up so air moves underneath.

Will you drive onto sand?

If the pad is firm. Loose sand lets a tilt-tray dig in while it tips. A compacted patch or solid corner supports fixes most harbour lots. Photos first.

Who is the council?
